No one's here. I haven't done a thing in my classes. It's ridiculous. I could have seen Lady Gaga (for free) in central park if my dad told me before I was in the showere this morning. It's ridiculous.

Reaching the End of The Boulevard of Broken Dreams: A tribute to a show that changed my life

As Green Day’s Rock Operetta, American Idiot, reaches its end on Sunday April 24th, I feel that it deserves a proper word on how moving and touching of a Broadway show it is. Aside from the humor and the rocking showtunes, the story can bring one to tears, especially a high school student preparing for college.



The show tells the story of a young adult, Johnny, who’s fed up with suburbia. He abandons his life of TV, booze, boredom and bullshit to go to the city. Of his two friends, one stays at home with his pregnant girlfriend and the other goes off to the army. Johnny’s feeling alone and let’s himself go; enter St. Jimmy.



St. Jimmy is one of the most interesting characters in the show. His role is up to the viewer’s choice. Either he’s a psychopathic drug dealer that Johnny latches onto as a close friend, or he is a figment of Johnny’s imagination that allows him to do everything he ever wanted to. I’m going to go with a figment of his imagination. Adopting St. Jimmy’s personality, Johnny takes drugs and meets the girl of his dreams, Whatsername. Whatsername and Johnny have sex as Will, Johnny’s friend, reads a letter from Johnny about life in the city. He hears about Whatsername and the drugs Johnny has been experimenting with.


As Johnny and Whatsername shoot drugs, Will’s girlfriend leaves him. Tunny, Johnny’s other friend, has lost his leg in the army and receives an acrobatic, drug-induced trip with the “Extraordinary Girl.” Then we cut back to Johnny who is sitting on his bed next to a sleeping Whatsername. He sings the previously unreleased Green Day ballad “When it’s Time,” as she sleeps. As the romantic moment settles, St. Jimmy returns with a knife and makes Johnny threaten Whatsername. Johnny passes out as Whatsername tells him he is out of control and the Extraordinary Girl nurses Tunny back to health. After Johnny regains consciousness and sings part of “21 Guns,” he runs away and Whatsername lashes out in the estrogen raged “Letterbomb.” She tells him that she can’t take what he’s become and leaves him.


After, all the men sing the ballad “Wake Me up When September Ends.” They’ve all lost something: a limb, a girlfriend or hope. St. Jimmy kills himself and Johnny gets a “real” office job, but he can’t stand it. He cries for someone to “GET ME THE FUCK RIGHT OUT OF HERE!” While Johnny works his way home, Will can’t help but remember his girlfriend leaving him. He’s upset and pissed and when he’s at his lowest, she walks in with her new “Rock and Roll” boyfriend to rub it in his face. Johnny decides to come home, back to suburbia.


He reunites with Will and Tunny, who has been discharged from the war. He’s happy to be home exclaiming “We’re back in the barrio, but to you and me that’s jingletown.” Despite being glad to see his friend, he can’t help but think about Whatsername. The show closes with the heart-wrenching song of remembrance “Whatsername.”


As the cast comes out for the encore of “Good Riddance,” you know you’ve been hit with a whirlwind. As a suburban teenager, who is just a train ride away from the city, I can’t help but relate to the protagonist in this story. Johnny screams exactly everything I want to scream in my own town. As he says in part three of “Jesus of Suburbia,” “EVERYONE’S SO FULL OF SHIT! BORN AND RAISED BY HYPOCRITES!” When you’re a teenage boy who loves Green Day, Marilyn Manson and other extreme music, that’s how you feel walking into a school where everyone has a Starbucks latte in hand and Hollister clothes on their back. You become an outcast, and the only escape is something bigger than yourself. The city. It’s a place so big that you won’t stand out as a freak like you do in your town where everyone knows everything about you all the way back to your great grandparents. I couldn’t help but weep the third and final time I saw the show and Van Hughes sang “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” The lyrics of so much of the beginning are so relatable it’s not funny. I see more and more each time, how trapped I am.


I’m sixteen. I’m bored. I’m preparing for college. I hate the town I live in. I hate most of the people in my town. Most people don’t get me. I am a fuck up. I am an idiot. I live in the town where the fuck ups go to die. Every day I tell my girlfriend I can’t wait to get out of this town. If someone told me to write an autobiography, I would give them a ticket to see American Idiot. It tells the true story of your white teenage misfit. Anyone, who has ever felt alienated, truly alienated, will relate to American Idiot and be moved by it. It made me wake up in the morning and say “Holy shit. Is this my life?”


It is incredibly powerful. American Idiot will make one laugh, cry and wonder what the hell they are doing with their life. From the first masturbation reference down to the last heartfelt ballad, it takes the audience on a wild ride of drugs, young lust, war, rage and love. It’s a shame to see it close, but all good things must come to an end.

Third Time's a charm

Last night, I saw American Idiot for my 3rd and final time. It was amazing. I started tearing up during "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and laughed my ass off when Billie Joe said "Winning" right before "give me novacaine." Ironically, Charlie Sheen will be at Radio City tonight. The tale is moving. It's truly incredible to see live. It will move you while you cry and laugh your ass off. Johnny represents a rebellious passionate rage that burns in all of us that screams "WHY THE FUCK AM I LIVING LIKE THIS?!" This show is inspiring. Every time I see it I notice something new and I want to get the fuck out of my prissy bitch motherfucking town. SAINT JIMMY RULES!

Hoping for a snow day.

Driver's ed is bullshit. I don't want to go to school tomorrow. I need to finish driver's ed. I need to go on wednesday, but I can't. I'm going to see memphis, or we'll have a snow day. So that's a double lose, but I missed a few driver's ed classes(2). They also cancelled a shit ton because of snow and shit. They can't prevent me from getting my liscense. If they do, I'm going to be fucking pissed.



I also don't want to go to school tommorow, but we need to for rehearsal because the show is going to hell in a handbasket.

Tumblr Sucks

Studying in front of your teachers

I'm currently in the writing lab at school. I have an English quiz on vocab in about 2 hours. I forgot to study over yesterday's snow day, thus when my teacher asked me if I studied, I said I did, which is somewhat true, I have looked over the words, but I didn't "study." I told her "yes, but I'm going to look over them again this period," which I did. So I looked over the words. I think I got enough from them to get through the test with a reasonably good grade. My girlfriend asked if she should quiz me. I told her not to, because with the teacher in front of me I feel like she would know I didn't study. Oh well. It was intimidatinig, but I should do well on the test.

Let it (S)NO(w)

Snow sucks. I was supposed to go to NYSTEA today, but due to our retarded bus company and school system, it looks like our school will not attend the NYSTEA conference. NYSTEA is always an amazing weekend. So if I dont get my $300 back that I paid for the trip, my schools gonna write me a cheque for $300 dollars, they're gonna get sued, or I'm gonna take a massive shit in the middle of the hallway. Ontop of that, I'm going to have to shovel this mass of cold, frozen shit that fell from the sky. Any other friday, this would have been lovely. Today, it's a fucking bitch.

I'm writing a chemistry lab...not much left to say. It's just pointless. I don't want to be a chemist. The fact that I know the chemical reactions when one burns a ribbon of magnesium, means nothing to me. I went through a long day with rehearsal, school and driver's ed...Not in that order. I go home and watch How I Met Your Mother and then, do homework. Why do we have to rewrite this whole process. It's there. I can read it and do the lab based off of that.
